Environmental Impact

Minimizing our impact on the environment, by leaving a space the way we found it or better, is an act of human decency. By leading the way we seek to inspire and appeal to the human decency in those who manipulate vast amounts of soil, in order to extract precious minerals as part of the mining process.

The environmental damage caused by abandoned pits is vast and layered. The earth is a living organism with a an enigmatic rhythm that pulses with unwavering regularity in 26 second intervals, like a seismic heartbeat. The shift in the earth frequency, caused by leaving behind these gaping holes, can be measured within a 7 mile radius. The pits pose various environmental hazards, that future generations inherit. During the raining season the pits fill with water and become giant breeding pools for mosquitos that spread malaria. Remote communities are at increased risk, as they are left unprotected without access to healthcare. When in close proximity to river beds, the pits often cause erosion that lead to flooding during the raining season. Entire areas are washed away posing hazards to the communities that live along these rivers. Furthermore the communities that own the land, and lease it to mining companies, remain in generational poverty, as they do not have the finances to close the pits once the mining company has left (the rent of an excavator is $800 / day and it takes days or weeks to close the pits). Lastly, the deforestation, that takes place in areas that are covered with flora and fauna, is a contributing factor to climate change.

The regenesis of the land, is vital for flora and fauna to thrive and photosynthesize. This process is essential for life on Earth as it provides the primary source of oxygen and food for most ecosystems, but also to mitigate the effects of climate change by removing climate-warming carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Mine To Farm

  • Close Mining Pits

THE MINE2FARM rehabilitation initiative, not only protects the environment and communities from environmental hazards, such as malaria mosquitos that breed in abandoned mining pits during raining season, or erosions and flooding near river beds, but also creates a thriving eco system for future generations to benefit from. protect the environment

Closing Mining Pits

Abandoned Mining Pits pose a variety of hazards. During the raining season the pits fill with water and turn into large ponds and lakes, that become excessive breeding ground for mosquitos carrying the deadly Malaria virus. Remote mining communities are often left unprepared to infectious diseases such as Malaria, which can be fatal if not treated. Lack of access to medical facilities, leaves the communities vulnerable to the disease.

When these lakes form in mines that have previously used mercury in their mining process, the water becomes toxic. When it enters the food chain, through fish or irrigation, it causes mercury poisoning, which can lead to cancer and death. Mercury poisoning is common in mining communities. When left untreated mercury poisoning is fatal, which is very often the case due to lack of medical access in remote mining communities.

Lakes that form in abandoned pits in close proximity to rivers, often causes erosion, which in turn can lead to flooding of villages.

Abandoned mining pits, leave communities with land that is of no use, since they cannot build nor farm in the pits. The extortion impacts both the communities as well as the environment.

Environmental Protection & Rehabilitation is key to sustainability. Closing former mines is the first step in rehabilitating the land.

Green Energy

Setting up Green Energy Solutions is one of 4 pillars through which ETHICAL MINERALS aims to empower the mining communities. Green Energy Solutions enable remote mining communities to farm the land even during the dry season when watering the farms is impossible without electrically powered irrigation systems. Having light inside the households also enables kids to read and study after sunset, which is crucial to advance education. Green Energy Solutions are clean alternatives to toxic diesel generators, that cause unnecessary pollution, harming humans and nature.

Harvest

Typically Mining Communities are so poor that food security is an issue. Agricultural Water Irrigation systems powered by Green Energy Solutions such as Solar or Wind, increase productivity and yield of the farms. Communities can sell the surplus of food they farm. Nurturing the communities is a commitment we make to the people, that mine the precious minerals for us.
